PA Turnpike Solar Power Initiative Will Advance Development Of In-Road Vehicle Charging

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) “is jumping into solar energy production to power its maintenance and office buildings with a long-term goal: using solar-generated power to electrify portions of the toll road so electric vehicles can charge as they travel.” As a first step, PTC is poised to activate a solar farm with 3,300 panels that it installed on a five-acre hillside adjacent to a new maintenance and trades facility on the Greensburg Bypass (Turnpike 66) near Jeannette. The solar array, together with a natural gas generator, creates a microgrid that supplies the maintenance facility’s electricity and heat, as well as surplus electricity PTC will sell to a local utility. At the same time, PTC, the Ohio Turnpike and a Utah State University team are cooperating on a pilot to use the solar-generated power “to electrify part of the highway. That is expected to begin with a demonstration project using a turnpike parking space as a charging station in the next 18 months, followed by electrifying part of the toll road system straddling the Ohio-Pennsylvania border so drivers can power up while they drive.”

Maine DOT Proposes To Build Solar Array Adjacent To Turnpike

WABI reports, “A pair of solar farms are set to be built along the Maine Turnpike in Augusta, and could save Mainers millions in electricity costs. . . . The solar farms will be built in empty space along exits 109 and 112. . . . The state estimates that the panels will power over a thousand homes and save over seven million dollars in electricity costs over the next 20 years.” Maine DOT is mounting the project, which drew criticism from a city council member who objected to its aesthetics and the state’s failure to consult with city officials.
