Senator Barrasso Plans To Cede Leadership Of Highway Committee Next Year

ARTBA Newsline reports that US Senator John Barrasso (R-WY) intends to vacate the chair (or ranking membership) of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee in the next Congress and instead assume a leadership role on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) is in line to replace Barrasso. She currently chairs the EPW committee’s Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee “and has two decades of experience on Senate and House committees with jurisdiction over transportation policy.”

Transportation Industry Reacts To FCC's Reallocation Of Wireless Spectrum

AASHTO Journal reports on the backlash against last week’s Federal Communications Commission decision to reallocate part of the 5.9 gigahertz wireless communications band, which was previously reserved for transportation system services. State DOTs and industry groups including AASHTO and the Intelligent Transportation Society of America oppose the FCC ruling, warning that it will hinder development of connected vehicle technologies that promise to reduce automobile crashes. Both the chair and the ranking member of the US House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee have asked the Government Accountability Office to study the safety implications of the FCC’s reallocation ruling.
