Maine DOT's Revenue Shortfall Forces It To Reevaluate Projects

WCSH reports, traffic levels on Maine DOT roadways “have dropped by roughly 10 percent throughout the pandemic compared to 2019, following a major drop-off in March.” As a consequence, state fuel tax revenues have fallen to the point that the department “is bracing to take in $40 million less than expected by the end of its biennium in June 2021.” MDOT spokesperson Paul Merrill, says current projects have not been impacted, in part because reduced traffic has facilitated economical daytime work. However, the department is now in the position of having to reassess future project scheduling.
