A Primer On Miami-Dade Express Lanes

Miami Herald offers a succinct primer on navigating South Florida’s tolled express lanes. The article covers access, fees and payment options for traveling a 21-mile stretch of I-95 lanes, 10 miles of the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and three miles on I-75. It also provides guidance for drivers of carpools, vanpools, hybrid vehicles and motorcycles who are eligible to register for free use of the express lanes.

San Francisco Chronicle published a Bay Area express lanes primer earlier this week in recognition of the expansion of managed lane facilities in its region.

New York's Scofflaw And "Ghost Car" Task Force Makes More Arrests, Seizes 193 Vehicles

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that the interagency task force created to apprehend persistent toll violators and get “ghost cars” — vehicles with fake and obstructed license tags — off New York’s streets conducted two days of unannounced enforcement operations this week. “Officers positioned at seven bridges and tunnels seized 193 vehicles, made 56 arrests and issued 1,381 summonses. . . . The scofflaws had amassed more than $1,228,000 in unpaid tolls and fees, judgments and debts.” It was MTA’s tenth such targeted enforcement operation. It took place on Monday and Wednesday, and the facilities involved were  the Queens-Midtown Tunnel; the Robert F. Kennedy, Willis Avenue, Third Avenue and George Washington Bridges; and the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels.

Caltrans Successfully Pilots Orange And White Striping To Enhance Work Zone Safety

Caltrans says its experimental marking of a road construction zone with orange and white stripes is paying off, KTLA reports. “’Recent survey data shows that approximately 83.18% of road users who traveled in the orange striping experienced increased awareness of being in a construction zone,’ said Caltrans public affairs manager Steve Welborn.” A majority of drivers also reported that the visual cue prompted them to slow down and it’s easier to see the striping at night. The pilot began in 2021 on the I-5 Build North County Corridor Project in northern San Diego County. That project will conclude next year, but Welborn said Caltrans aims to make the construction zone striping standard practice in the future.
