More Details On Wednesday's Death Of Six Maryland Highway Workers

The Baltimore Sun (subscription required for full access) provides additional details on the crash that killed six highway workers on the Baltimore beltway (I-695) on Wednesday. The victims, identified as contractor employees, included a father and son who were working together on “a project to address congestion along I-695 from I-70 to Maryland 43 . . . by converting portions of the existing median shoulder into a travel lane during the morning and evening rush hours.” Brad Sant, an American Road and Transportation Builders Association safety and education executive, commented, “These are just people who are trying to earn a living and they end up dying because of it,” adding that the incident “underscores the vulnerability of construction workers in highway work zones” and “serves as a stark reminder for all transportation system users of the critical need for increased attention to the unique safety hazards associated with these sites.” A Texas A&M Transportation Institute research engineer gives the newspaper his analysis of the crash after reviewing video.

The New York Times also covers the story.

Dismantling Of Obsolete Maryland Toll Span Begins

Crews have begun to dismantle the obsolete Nice Memorial-Middleton Bridge structure in southern Maryland, WBAL reports. The two-lane span was replaced with a four-lane bridge equipped for all-electronic tolling that opened in October 2022. A coalition of cycling and trail advocacy groups had sought to preserve the old bridge for bicyclists and pedestrians, after a dedicated lane for walkers and bikers was removed from the new bridge’s design. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) countered that leaving the old bridge in place would be costly and pose a safety risk due to erosion around its foundation. A federal judge in October ruled that the demolition could proceed, and crews began their work on Tuesday, March 21.
