Sault Ste. Marie Bridge Customers Will Trade Payment Cards For RFID Stickers

WKAR reports on the changes coming soon to the Sault Ste. Marie Bridge as part of a $9.3 million toll system modernization project that also involves the Blue Water Bridge. “Currently, drivers who use the [Prox card prepaid-toll collection system] must have a physical card with them and flash it at the toll booth to get across the bridge which can be a little tricky in the winter months and for semi-truck drivers.” New collection technology scheduled for launch after March 31 will operate with windshield RFID tags. Peter Petainen, bridge administration executive director, notes that traffic volume is slowly recovering from a pandemic-related drop and now stands at about 66 percent of the level recorded in 2019.
