Golden Gate Bridge Officials Make The Case For Toll Rate Increases

Marin Independent Journal reports on the pitch Golden Gate Bridge officials are making through public outreach for a series of toll rate increases that would begin July 1, 2024. During recent online workshops, Jennifer Mennucci, the bridge district’s budget director, discussed two plans, both of which would break the $10.00 barrier for all drivers for the first time. The proposals would yield between $101 million and $139 million over five years to help close a $220 million budget shortfall projected to occur during the same period. “With big-ticket capital improvements on the horizon, such as an $880 million seismic retrofit of the bridge and the $50 million San Rafael Transit Center relocation, officials said they need extra toll revenue.” This week, area residents can weigh in again on the proposals when the bridge district board conducts a toll hike public hearing.

Vermont Governor Endorses Imposing Vehicle-Miles-Traveled Fee On EVs

The administration of Vermont Governor Phil Scott (R) “is backing a plan to impose a so-called ‘miles traveled’ fee on all electric vehicles (EVs) in 2026 as a way to make up for millions of dollars in lost gas tax revenue,” Vermont Public reports. To sidestep privacy concerns or high-cost data collection methods, the Agency of Transportation pitched to the Senate Transportation Committee last week that the mileage simply be recorded at annual inspections. The committee also is evaluating the possibility of establishing a new annual fee for EVs. Currently there are about 13,000 in the state, but ownership reportedly is on track to double “in the next few years.”

Protests By Indian Farmers Disrupt Toll Road Operations

The Economic Times reports, farmers and farm organizations agitating for more central government support are once again blocking large numbers of highway toll plazas in the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. One group has mounted a “siege” of 21 plazas that apparently continued through today. The leader of a union involved in government negotiations said his organization will stage a protest that allows motorists to pass toll-free through all Punjab toll plazas over a three-day period this week.

Reuters reports on the demonstrators’ demands and the status of their talks with government representatives.
