Massachusetts Senators Lobby To Keep Cape Cod Bridges Funding In Federal Budget

As House and Senate versions of the 2024 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill are being reconciled, US Senators Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren (both D-MA) are urging fellow lawmakers to preserve $350 million in funding allocated for the replacement of Cape Cod’s Sagamore and Bourne bridges, Transportation Today reports. The effort to restore the Cape’s only two land connections to the rest of Massachusetts has been mired in funding difficulties since a toll financing plan was abandoned several years ago. In December, the Sagamore Bridge Project was awarded a $372 million Mega grant, and Massachusetts has been given a $1.6 million planning grant. Additionally, President Biden has pledged $600 million through the US Army Corps of Engineers budget, with a $350 million downpayment already budgeted.
