Kapsch Chosen To Replace Sweden's Nationwide Traffic Signal Control System
Kapsch TrafficCom announced it received the contract to implement and maintain a new centralized traffic signal control and monitoring system for Sweden. Sweden’s transport administration, Trafikverket, chose Kapsch to replace the entire existing, nationwide system for traffic light control with the firm’s EcoTrafiX™ Command product. Kapsch will adapt the installation to the Nordic RSMP-protocol and integrate it with Trafikverket’s IT infrastructure. EcoTrafiX™ Command will be managed from Stockholm and Gothenburg through Trafikverket’s road operations environment.

Streetsblog NYC critiques Monday’s New York Post article suggesting that London congestion pricing effectively reduced traffic problems at the expense of businesses, especially those engaged in the restaurant and entertainment trades. “The paper,” according to Streetsblog, “based its doomsday conclusion — bandied about to Midtown shopkeepers for outrage reactions — on a single report about a single [London department store].” It turns out, that store did have a temporary dip in sales, but the report documenting its circumstances concluded that congestion pricing “did not affect overall retail sales in central London.” Streetsblog cites two reports neglected by the Post, one concluding that congestion pricing improved London’s overall economy and another that found revenue drops experienced by some businesses in the first months of tolling quickly “reversed.” Streetsblog states that the current wave of opposition to MTA’s congestion pricing program is predictable and attitudes will change once the public sees the benefits tolling will make possible.
