Supply Chain Crisis Instigates Call For Flexibility In Use Of COVID Relief Funds

AASHTO Journal reports, AASHTO is one of 19 transportation trade groups calling on the US Treasury to allow agencies that received COVID-19 pandemic relief funds to use them “to mitigate the effects of supply chain delays and shortages,” particularly the growing cost of construction and maintenance materials. The groups’ request cited “both shortages of and increased prices on manufactured steel, steel and plastic piping, paint, concrete materials, and many other items – with cost increases ranging from 15 percent to a doubling or tripling on some items like manufactured steel.” It added that the current predicament has the potential “to undercut the anticipated benefits” of Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act investment.

New Calls For Ontario Government To Remove Highway 412 And 418 Tolls

DurhamRegion.com reports, two regional government lawmakers “have added their voices to the chorus of those wanting tolls removed from [Ontario] highways 412 and 418.” A number of regional and local government leaders are pushing the issue, citing unfairness in provincial decision-making about which 400-series highways require tolling. The article notes that Ontario’s current government “extended a toll-rate freeze on the highways for two years in April 2021, but has made no commitment to get rid of the tolls,” and it “recently announced it will be fully funding a bypass between Hwy. 400 and Hwy. 404 that will not be tolled.”
