Kapsch Technologist Comments On The Future Of Tolling And RUC Development

Kapsch TrafficCom asked Gabriel Makki, one of its tolling solutions experts, for his views on the future of tolling technology and the emergence of road-use charging systems. Makki comments that in addition to generating revenue, traditional tolling and RUC share the capability to influence driver behavior in the interests of reducing traffic congestion and air pollution. He adds that mileage-based charging, the crux of RUC systems, is gaining favor among “forward-looking” toll operators who are adopting distance-based collection technology. Kapsch is now testing RUC in the field, says Makki. “We are involved in these exciting developments, currently rolling out an RUC proof of concept . . . based on Global Navigation Satellite System technology in Norway. This project gives us the opportunity to deploy our know-how and technology in this emerging domain. We look forward to sharing more on this RUC PoC in the near future.”
