Florida DOT Creates Temporary Link To Pine Island In Just Three Days

Miami Herald reports on the construction of a temporary bridge that has reconnected hurricane-devastated Pine Island to Florida’s mainland. The span is currently open only to first responders and trucks delivering badly needed supplies; Florida DOT has not said when the island’s 9,000 residents will be able to access it.

In a Wednesday news release announcing the opening, FDOT said its crews were able to fulfill the task of making emergency road and bridge repairs in just three days, well ahead of a deadline set by Governor Ron DeSantis.

SANDAG May Readopt RUC Charge In Transportation Plan Update

The Coast News Group reports, when the San Diego Association of Governments board voted last month to remove a road-use charge provision from a transformational, $172 billion regional transportation plan, it eliminated a political lightning rod. “However, the removal of the charge is temporary and [it] may be included in the plan’s 2025 update.” According to one board member, Coronado, California, Mayor Richard Bailey, “These plans take several years to adopt . . . that is why although we’re removing the road usage charge from the 2021 plan, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see other road usage charges included in the 2025 plan. A lot of the people on the board, myself included, are simply trying to find a transportation plan that works for San Diego County.”

New York Thruway Opens Third Renovated Service Area

The New York Thruway yesterday announced the opening of the new Junius Ponds Service Area in Phelps. In addition to food services (including Shake Shack, Starbucks and an Applegreen Market Store), the facility has farm market space, food truck space and (forthcoming) EV charging units. The location is the third service area to reopen as part of a $450 million public-private partnership project to redevelop all 27 service areas.

The Citizen reports, “The project has faced delays due to supply chain issues and other factors. Ten service areas, including Chittenango, Indian Castle and Junius Ponds, closed in July 2021 for reconstruction. An initial timeline projected that the first service areas, including Junius Ponds, would reopen early this year. But with the delays, the opening date was pushed back to the third quarter of this year. . . .”
