FDOT's Suspension Of Garcon Bridge Tolls Enters Its Ninth Month
WKRG reports, on Friday, Florida DOT Secretary Kevin Thibault directed Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise to extend the toll suspension in effect for the Garcon Point Bridge through Sunday, June 6, 2021. Governor Ron DeSantis (R) first halted collection of the five-dollar toll during September’s Hurricane Sally, but a continuous series of extensions has been ordered because of storm damage to the nearby Pensacola Bay Bridge. It was reported last week that the reopening of that bridge is on track to take place over Memorial Day weekend.

DurhamRegion.com reports, two more municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area are objecting to the Ontario government’s recent decision to freeze toll rates on Highways 412 and 418, rather than eliminating tolls entirely. Local lawmakers claim the province’s ruling conservatives have failed to follow through on campaign pledges to end tolling. They also suggest tolling is “unfair” to their constituents because motorists using major highways on the west side of Toronto are not charged.

WESH looks at a Brevard County, Florida, county commissioner’s rationale for supporting a proposal to give the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) control of the SR 528 segment running from Port Canaveral west to the Orange County line. Commissioner Curt Smith (who also sits on the CFX board) acknowledges the transfer may open the door to a resumption of tolling, but defends that possibility, stating circumstances have changed in the 25 years since the county removed an earlier toll charge and made a commitment not to reintroduce it.

The Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) announced that it has received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada for DRPA”s FY 2019 comprehensive annual financial report. “The award marks the twenty-eighth conservative year the agency was recognized for financial transparency.”
