Illinois Commission Will Study Gas Tax Alternatives And Other Infrastructure Policies

Daily Herald reports, “Illinois’ ambitious goal of putting 1 million electric vehicles on the roads by 2030” is forcing lawmakers to reevaluate the state’s highway funding policies and heavy reliance on revenue from fossil fuel taxes. The governor recently signed legislation (SB 1233) creating the Blue-Ribbon Commission on Transportation Infrastructure Funding and Policy, which is charged with delivering recommendations on a funding overhaul by January 31, 2023. “Options on the table include a fee based on vehicle miles traveled, tolling, and congestion pricing, officials said.”

According to an Illinois Senate Democratic Caucus news release, in addition to  infrastructure funding issues, the commission will study “current and future workforce needs, safety improvements, racial equity and how to expand multi-modal transportation networks.”
