Rhode Island Prevents Crashes, Save Lives With Wrong-Way Driving Detection Systems

WPRI reports, in 2015, Rhode Island DOT began installing wrong-way driving deterrent, detection and warning systems that currently cost about $75,000 at 29 of the states 400 highway offramps. “Data from RIDOT shows in the seven years before the equipment was installed, there were 91 wrong-way drivers, with 34 crashes and 13 fatalities. In the seven years since they were activated . . . , there has been one crash and zero fatalities at ramps equipped with the system. At ramps without the detection technology, there have been five crashes and one fatality during that same time period.” RIDOT safety engineer Steven Pristawa tells WPRI the warning systems detect four to five wrong-way driving incidents each month. “These devices have helped,” he said. “When I see a wrong-way driver correcting — there is a good chance we just saved a life.”

Federal Agencies Issue Blueprint For Long-Term Effort To Decarbonize Transportation Sector

Transportation Today reports on the release this week of the the Biden administration’s US National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonization, a first-ever, government-wide strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector by 2050. “Transportation policy is inseparable from housing and energy policy, and transportation accounts for a major share of US greenhouse gas emissions, so we must work together in an integrated way to confront the climate crisis,” said USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg in announcing the blueprint, the first deliverable from a collaboration launched last year by USDOT, the Departments of Energy and Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency.

According to a blueprint fact sheet issued by the energy department, the interagency plan “provides a comprehensive, system-level perspective of the entire transportation system across all passenger and freight travel modes and fuels, and lays out three key strategies to achieve decarbonization.” It will be followed by detailed, sector-specific action plans that the federal agencies propose to develop with stakeholder input.

The Hill notes that the blueprint sets an agenda and ambitious goals that a future administration, particularly a Republican one, might not be inclined to pursue.

Axios: "Historic Transportation Crises Haunt Buttigieg"

“A historic string of air, rail and supply-chain meltdowns has plagued Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s first two years in office, placing him — for better or worse — at the center of crises affecting millions of people,” reports Axios. The article looks at the “snafus” Buttigieg has had to deal with and conflicting Democratic and Republican evaluations of his performance. Like all cabinet members with presidential aspirations, says Axios, the secretary’s “day job is filled with plenty of political downsides — without much opportunity to set the political agenda.”
