LA Metro Chief Discusses Her First Year On The Job And Current Projects
KPCC (scroll down to “Metro CEO Stephanie Wiggins . . .”) interviews LA Metro Los Angeles CEO Stephanie Wiggins about her first year on the job. The Olive Press reports, Spain’s highways directorate has paid the consulting firm Ineco €1.4 million to produce several reports on a “new highways financing scheme.” The firm’s task is to study options for charging drivers to use facilities (both a fixed annual fee and tolling will be considered). Ineco will also report on whether the scheme should extend to regional as well as national highways; recommend appropriate fee levels; and evaluate possible fee payment systems. Spain must impose some form of road use charging by 2024 to qualify for €70 billion in European Union COVID-19 recovery grants.
The Local (Spain) (subscription required) has a more detailed report on the Ineco study, a public backlash on tolling it has occasioned, and estimates of the amount of revenue a toll collection system would yield. The article notes that Spain has a sizeable highway maintenance budget deficit and it “is one of the countries in Europe where drivers currently pay the least for the use of its high-capacity road network, spending 76 percent less on tolls than the average for EU countries.”
