CTRMA Launches MoPac Auxiliary And Merge Lanes Project Next Week

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (CTRMA) announced that construction of the Barton Skyway Ramp Relief Project will begin next Tuesday, January 31, and is expected to reach completion early next year. By adding auxiliary and merge lanes to southbound MoPac Express, CTRMA expects to alleviate congestion around several interchanges and improve travel time throughout the corridor. “Backups between the Bee Caves Road and Loop 360 cause congestion extending far beyond those short limits,” noted CTRMA Executive Director James Bass. “We hope to provide meaningful relief to the region with these improvements.”

Buttigieg Visits Golden Gate Bridge To Celebrate Seismic Retrofit Grant

San Francisco Chronicle reports, federal officials including USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg and White House Infrastructure Coordinator Mitch Landrieu joined former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco Mayor London Breed and other officials on Monday to celebrate the award of a $400 million federal grant to complete seismic retrofits of the Golden Gate Bridge. “Construction for the final project is expected to begin in late 2024 and be completed in 2029, officials said.” A $206 million project to build a suicide net on the bridge is already underway.

Marin Independent Journal also covers the press event, with emphasis on the disparity between federal funding for capital projects and the aid made available to transit systems gripped by budget crises.

Bills In Three States Propose Highway Speed Limit Increases

Legislators in Indiana, South Carolina and West Virginia have proposed changes to speed limits in their states, “Land Line” Magazine reports. In Indiana, where cars can travel at 70 MPH but trucks only at 65 MPH, SB 13 and HB 1165 would eliminate the speed limit differential. Separately, HB 1077 would raise the speed limit from 55 mph to 70 mph (for both cars and large trucks) on stretches of US 24, 25, and 30. A bill in South Carolina would alter the state’s minimum speed thresholds: On interstates with a posted speed limit of 70 MPH, H 3364 proposes lifting the minimum speeds from 45 to 50 MPH. And a West Virginia lawmaker has introduced SB 34, which would “authorize 80 mph speeds on interstate highways and four-lane, limited-access highways. The bill provides an exception for portions of those roadways passing through the city limits of municipalities.” According to “Land Line,” Maine and Michigan are the only states east of the Mississippi River with posted speed limits above 70 MPH.
