Reason Foundation Finds Highway System Problems Concentrated in Ten States
The Reason Foundation yesterday issued its 24th Annual Highway Report on state highway conditions and said, “After decades of incremental progress in several key categories, [its study] finds the nation’s highway conditions are deteriorating, especially in a group of [10] problem-plagued states struggling to repair deficient bridges, maintain Interstate pavement and reduce urban traffic congestion. ‘In looking at the nation’s highway system as a whole, there was a decades-long trend of incremental improvement in most key categories, but the overall condition of the highway system has worsened in recent years,’” said Baruch Feigenbaum, lead author of the libertarian think tank’s report. California, Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey were among the ten states with the lowest system performance rankings.

The Mainichi reports, “The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it will allow a time-based variable toll system for Tokyo’s expressways during the 2020 Games to reduce traffic congestion, according to sources close to the event organizers. The IOC had initially been resistant to the idea over worries it would impose a burden on the general public. However, the green light from the committee opens the way for a full-scale discussion in the host city on implementing the variable tolls during the games.”
