The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) issued a news release today to mark the groundbreaking on its State Road 516 (Lake/Orange Expressway) project. The agency describes the project as a “a bold step” toward building its most innovative and sustainable facility. “The Lake/Orange Expressway will be an example of what is possible when we think about transportation into the future,” said Michelle Maikisch,  CFX chief executive. “Innovation, technology and sustainable elements will make for more efficient and responsible transportation solutions.” The release lists the tollway’s remarkable design and construction features, such as wireless in-road vehicle charging, solar-generated power supply, low maintenance landscaping, a wildlife underpass and a recreational trail.

USDOT: Transportation Services' Contribution To GDP Increased In 2022

Yesterday, USDOT announced that in 2022 transportation services accounted for 6.7 percent ($1.7 trillion) of the $26.2 trillion US economy. The department’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) uses its Transportation Satellite Accounts to measure the overall contribution to enhanced gross domestic product of three types of activities: for-hire transportation, in-house transportation (transportation activities carried out by non-transportation industries for their own purposes), and transportation activities carried out by households using personal motor vehicles. The measure of transportation services’ contribution to the economy fell in 2020 due to effects of the pandemic and a recession. However, activity returned to a pre-pandemic level (6.3 percent of GDP) in 2021, and rose an additional 0.4 percent from 2021 to 2022. See the announcement for a breakdown of the 2022 data and information about transportation’s contribution relative to other sectors of the economy.
