Kapsch CV Technology Will Help Florida County Improve Intersection Safety And Traffic Flow

Kapsch TrafficCom announced that Pinellas County, Florida, which has the highest percentage of pedestrian-involved crashes and fatalities in the state, has selected the company to implement an arterial intersection safety solution that will also help manage traffic congestion. Kapsch “video analytics and connected vehicle technology” will “detect and warn of the presence of vulnerable road users” in the intersections. In addition, a Kapsch decision-support system that combines “predictive analytics with load balancing algorithms to predict the likelihood of near-term traffic disturbances” will provide drivers with route information at key decision points. That technology will help reduce congestion by balancing the flow of traffic over primary and secondary roads. Dr. Jeff Adler, a Kapsch vice president of solution consulting and the project director, commented, “This will be our first project in North America to deploy a solution that fully incorporates our entire traffic product portfolio, making traffic safer and reducing pedestrian accidents.” Kapsch, which received a $3.5 million county contract, will deploy its systems by the end of this year and then conduct a year of monitoring and calibration. The project is funded by a $4.6 million FHWA Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment Program grant.

New York Vehicle License And Toll Payment Task Force Reports More Arrests and Citations

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced that an interagency task force created to nab persistent toll violators and get “ghost cars” off New York’s streets mounted another two-day operation at the end of last week. “Officers seized 21 vehicles for a number of violations including unpaid tolls, unregistered vehicles and suspended licenses among other traffic infractions on Thursday, April 18, at the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge, and on Friday, April 19, at the Throgs Neck Bridge, George Washington Bridge and Lincoln Tunnel. The scofflaws had amassed more than $586,000 in unpaid tolls and fees, judgments and debts. The operation resulted in 21 arrests and 793 summonses issued.” According to MTA Bridges and Tunnels president Catherine Sheridan, “Amplified enforcement efforts have yielded big returns and hopefully sent a message to all scofflaws and aspiring scofflaws – if you try to skip out on the toll at any crossing in the metropolitan region you will only end up paying more.” She thanked officers from the several police agencies represented on the task force for “diligent work” to ensure that all motorists pay their fair share of regional tolls.

Plow-Like Device Mounted On Trucks Makes PA Turnpike Road Cleanup Safer

KYW Radio reports, “Cleanup crews working along the Pennsylvania Turnpike no longer have to get out of their pickups to clear debris from the highway, thanks to technology making their jobs safer.” The technology in question is a product called LaneBlade, manufactured by Pennsylvania-based J-Tech. “It resembles a plow with ends that fold in at the touch of a button from inside the truck. It allows workers to corral road debris without having to walk near speeding traffic,” and it can be used both day and night. The turnpike commission first acquired the device two years ago, and it now has 26 in use on maintenance vehicles.
