Three Workers Die In Pennsylvania Work Zone Crash

The York Dispatch reports, three highway construction workers died early yesterday morning in an active PennDOT work zone on I-83 South in Lewisberry, south of Harrisburg. According to a preliminary police investigation, a box truck driver collided with a construction vehicle, veered onto the shoulder and struck the contract workers, who were sealing pavement cracks. A spokeswoman for Associated Pennsylvania Constructors, an organization representing the state’s road and bridge construction industry, commenting on the incident’s occurrence during National Work Zone Awareness Week, stated, “It’s a stark reminder that drivers need to slow down and pay attention in work zones. These are real people that work within inches of traffic every day. So, it can be a really dangerous job.”

Ohio Turnpike And Ohio DOT Spotlight Extensive 2024 Capital Project Plans

The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (OTIC) issued a comprehensive, county-by-county list of its 2024 construction projects. It notes, “This year, [OTIC] has a budget of about $254 million for capital improvement projects. . . . This figure includes nearly $238 million for projects beginning in 2024 and completing prior year projects. More than $162 million of the 2024 capital plan is allocated for roadway and bridge projects. About 92 lane miles of pavement will be resurfaced . . . and an extensive amount of work will be performed on 26 bridges.” In keeping with the theme of National Work Zone Awareness Week, OTIC urged drivers “to be self-aware of dangerous behaviors behind the wheel . . . especially in work zones to reduce crashes.”

OTIC separately announced that a series of bridge rehabilitation projects in Lorain County has started to get underway already.

Ohio DOT issued a news release announcing the kickoff of its 2024 construction season. The state’s annual program represents a $2.8 billion investment in 950 road and bridge improvement projects, 39 of which are classified as “major” because they have a value above $10 million. The release highlights about a dozen construction projects.

TRB Webinars Will Explore Asset Management Planning And Aggregate Sustainability

The Transportation Research Board (TRB) has scheduled a Tuesday afternoon, April 23, webinar to address the “many practical barriers that keep agencies from effectively incorporating maintenance actions and cost” into transportation asset management plans (TAMPs). The event will focus on NCHRP Research Report 1076: A Guide to Incorporating Maintenance Costs into a Transportation Asset Management Plan, a National Cooperative Highway Research Program document that provides a framework for handling major challenges in projecting future maintenance costs. Presenters representing the Texas, Maryland and Alabama Departments of Transportation, and two consulting firms will “provide an overview of the framework and include practical examples from state highway agencies.”

A Thursday afternoon, April 25, TRB webinar will explore “aggregate optimization for concrete mix designs as well as [reclaimed asphalt pavement] and [recycled concrete aggregates] applications and how each impacts sustainability of aggregates.” TRB notes that “[i]mproving concrete mix designs through aggregate optimization is critical to achieve the concrete and cement industry goal of carbon neutrality by 2050,” and using reclaimed materials can have economic as well as environmental advantages. The webinar “is a follow on to TRB Webinar: Aggregate Sustainability—Production held on May 15, 2023.”
