US Border Communities Want Feds To Ease Crossing Restrictions
The Monitor editorial board joins the Texas Border Coalition and several federal lawmakers in urging the US government to remove travel restrictions imposed at ports of entry because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Critics of the current policy say it creates bottlenecks at border toll bridges. They also claim it hasn’t been effective in protecting public health. The editors write, “McAllen [Texas] Mayor Jim Darling recently noted that Mexican residents can fly to any part of the United States, but can’t drive to McAllen. The loss of [local] crossings has cost his city, and others all along the border, dearly. Darling said casual crossings were down 90%, with estimated losses of $2 million in bridge fees to the McAllen-Hidalgo International Toll Bridge Fund.”
