West Virginia Toll Bridge Will Remain Closed For Duration Of Rehab Project

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports, Parkersburg Bridge Partners (a United Bridge Partners subsidiary) will host two community open houses next week to update local residents on its Memorial Bridge rehabilitation project. “It’s an opportunity for concerned citizens to come in and ask questions,” said UBP executive Ken Szeliga. The company tried to keep one lane of the bridge open to traffic during construction, but it was forced to order a complete closure in August so workers could safely complete deck replacement and painting work. While the bridge will remain closed for the duration of the project, the opening date has been moved up by about two months. The refurbished span will have an open-road toll system.

Worker Shortages Force Changes In DOT Winter Maintenance Routines

AASHTO Journal reports, “Even as winter weather begins to drop snow and ice on roadways across the country, state departments of transportation continue adjusting their operations to manage what has become an ongoing shortage of snowplow operators.” In several Midwest states and Wyoming, officials are deploying maintenance crews according to conditions, which means shifting workers between districts. They are also advising motorists to plan trips carefully and anticipate potential unsafe conditions, since they will wait longer for many routes, especially secondary roadways, to be cleared for travel. Wyoming DOT reports that because snowplow and other vehicle parts are in short supply, “increasingly backordered and delayed,” keeping equipment on the roads may be another challenge it faces this winter.
