PA Turnpike Maintenance Work Will Cause Allegheny Tunnel Slowdowns This Month

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is advising motorists to be prepared for delays at the Allegheny Tunnel in Somerset County beginning Monday, June 8, through June 25. Work crews will be periodically closing one or the other tubes of the tunnel during the period in order to perform routine annual maintenance work.

China Eyes REITs To Finance Infrastructure Assets Such As Toll Roads

The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) reports, China is on the verge of embracing real estate investment trusts (REITs) as a means, initially, of financing “assets like warehouses or toll roads, as China ramps up its infrastructure building to support the economy. Issuing REITs, which trade like stocks on exchanges, would help raise capital for new projects and reduce the debt burden for local governments. Local governments in China issued nearly 3.2 trillion yuan ($450 billion) worth of bonds in the first five months this year, a 65% increase from a year earlier.” The article suggests that government support for REITs will probably make them attractive to early investors, but it also suggests China needs “deeper market reforms for REITs to succeed.”
