Reporter Grills Governor Cuomo on Congestion Pricing Delays
WLNY puts New York Governor Andrew Cuomo in the hot seat over the lack of public information about the cost and details of the Manhattan congestion pricing program. Cuomo says toll rates cannot be determined until a federal environmental review process is finished. WLNY counters, “[B]laming the feds may be just a new and convenient excuse.” Sam Schwartz tells the station state lawmakers have planned to keep a lid on the program’s details until shortly before its implementation date.

City News Service (via Los Angeles Daily News) reports, “Despite Los Angeles County’s legendary traffic jams, residents remain wedded to their cars and reluctant to use public transportation due to concerns over safety and convenience, according to a poll published Wednesday. . . .” The results of the University of Southern California-administered LABarometer internet survey reportedly indicate that “[p]rivate vehicles are used at more than twice the rate of the second-most popular transportation mode, ride-sharing services such as Uber or Lyft. . . . Respondents considered personal vehicles the safest, most convenient and enjoyable way to get around.”

The Metropolitan Transportation Commission announced that Caltrans will perform routine structural inspections of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge over a three-week period between the end of this month and mid-March. The work was briefly postponed while equipment that gives inspectors access to the underside of the bridge’s upper deck was upgraded. Periodic bicycle and pedestrian path closings will be required to accommodate a specialized inspection vehicle.
