Newburgh-Beacon Bridge Redecking Project Will Soon Reach Early Completion

Spectrum News 1 reports, “Following about two years of construction, traffic will soon be back to normal on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.” Chief Engineer Jeffrey Wright says restoration of the closed north span will be completed by the end of this month, several months ahead of schedule, bringing to an end a lengthy detour of westbound vehicles onto one lane of the south span. The ($95 million) rehabilitation project involved a complete deck and road surface replacement, installation of new concrete railings and safety parapets, and replacement of some steel support beams. “This provides a safe passage for commuters and commercial traffic across the Hudson River. [I-84 is] a main interstate for commercial traffic to the entire New England area,” Wright said. (TRN inserted a link.)

WXYZ reports, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel began yesterday to charge a reduced toll for eligible zero-emission vehicles enrolled in the Nexpress prepaid toll program. This rate reduction is our way of thanking our customers who drive electric vehicles for doing their part to reduce our carbon footprint and creating a cleaner future for all Michiganders.”

Op-Ed: Privacy Implications Of GPS-Based Highway Tolling Merit Careful Consideration

A Mint op-ed explores the potential privacy implications of the Indian government’s proposal to implement a GPS-based system of toll collection on national highways. Attorney Rahul Matthan explains why the system, intended to relieve traffic congestion at existing toll collection points, could eventually be deployed more widely and “make it easier than ever before to arrive at personal profiles based on travel patterns.” While he doesn’t advocate banning the technology, he maintains the government “would be remiss in its constitutional obligations if it fails to at least assess the harms that could result” from misuse of a vast repository of transportation data.
