Crews Are Working Around The Clock To Complete Two New Tampa Tollways
WTVT provides a progress update on Florida DOT’s $600 million Gateway Expressway project in greater Tampa, one component of the Tampa Bay Next Program. Now in its fifth year, it aims to improve US 19 and the Bayside Bridge connections with I-275. FDOT says more than 250 people are working day and night throughout the week to complete the project by next summer.
According to FDOT’s project website, the scope of work includes construction of two four-lane elevated tollways (designated SR 690 and SR 686A) to improve access to I-275 from US 19 and the Bayside Bridge, and the widening of I-275 to create express toll lanes (one in each direction) from around Gandy Boulevard north to the base of the Howard Frankland Bridge.

WSP USA announced a new offering, Mobility Marketplace, “a full suite of integrated services to help transportation agencies solve their modern transportation challenges using Future Ready® technology.” The new application suite consolidates into one program management office “a variety of mobility services for selected transportation modes and services: tolling, transit, ferry, road usage charging, managed lanes, congestion pricing, parking, pay-as-you-drive registration, pay-as-you-drive insurance, carsharing, ride hailing, micromobility, taxi, electric vehicle charging stations, and trip planning and booking services.” According to WSP’s news release, Mobility Marketplace enables “seamless delivery of diverse travel needs in all administrative, strategic, delivery and operational functions. Multiple transaction providers are also consolidated into one system, which allows for enhanced incentive programs to better balance individual travel decisions with societal use system requirements.” Because it can support public-private collaboration, Mobility Marketplace “allows public agencies to extend their ability to meet their goals and objectives without burdening taxpayers, while transportation agencies will benefit from developing proof of concepts and pilot deployments to test new ideas, refine services and ensure best-in-class service for their customers.”

The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) announced that GEICO, the country’s second-largest auto insurer, is the new sponsor of the authority’s roadside motorist assistance program, KTA Safety Assist. Authority CEO Steve Hewitt commented, “Thousands of drivers benefit from [the program] each year giving KHP troopers the time to focus on law enforcement activities. We’re grateful to have GEICO sponsor this valuable roadside assistance program.” Shane Wheeler, a GEICO regional vice president, said the company is proud of its new partnership with the turnpike, which is an extension of its policy of promoting driver safety and safe driving behavior. (GEICO sponsors roadside assistance operations in several other states.)
