Utah DOT Chief Predicts Tolls and RUC Will Gradually Supplant Gas Taxes
The Salt Lake Tribune reports, “Sure, the gasoline tax likely will be around for another 20 or 25 years. But Utah’s top transportation official said [yesterday] that it will be replaced more and more by charging drivers for every mile they drive and by imposing more tolls. ‘This is the future way,’ Utah Department of Transportation Director Carlos Braceras told the Utah Taxpayers Association annual conference. . . . ‘We’re going to fund [transportation] based on how much of the services you use.’” The Tribune article addresses Utah’s early moves toward adopting road usage charging and its experience with tolling.
KTVX reports on the Utah DOT’s ongoing study of measures to relieve traffic congestion in the Cottonwood Canyons recreation areas. The article notes that tolls could be introduced as a result of the study as early as 2022. UDOT’s aim is to reduce auto traffic into the environmentally sensitive region popular with skiers.
