Buttigieg Visits Golden Gate Bridge To Celebrate Seismic Retrofit Grant

San Francisco Chronicle reports, federal officials including USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg and White House Infrastructure Coordinator Mitch Landrieu joined former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, San Francisco Mayor London Breed and other officials on Monday to celebrate the award of a $400 million federal grant to complete seismic retrofits of the Golden Gate Bridge. “Construction for the final project is expected to begin in late 2024 and be completed in 2029, officials said.” A $206 million project to build a suicide net on the bridge is already underway.

Marin Independent Journal also covers the press event, with emphasis on the disparity between federal funding for capital projects and the aid made available to transit systems gripped by budget crises.
