Solo Drivers Aren’t The Only Beneficiaries Of Virginia DOT’s Growing Express Lanes Network

Sun Gazette reports, Virginia DOT officials, including mega projects and design-build program director Susan Shaw, recently briefed the Vienna town council on the expansion of Northern Virginia express lanes. They learned that when the final 13 miles of the 66 Express project (a P3 involving the Cintra-led I-66 Mobility Partners) is completed this month or next, the region’s express lanes network will reach 90 miles in length. VDOT said the I-66 project inclusive, it currently has 35 miles of additional dynamically tolled lanes now under construction, including segments on I-95 and I-495. The department is promoting bus, vanpool and high-occupancy vehicle use of the lanes in a variety of ways. In collaboration with Commuter Connections, a network of metro DC transportation organizations, it has started to offer incentives of up to $366 per person for new carpools that use 66 Express.
