The Virtual Public Meeting Format Will Outlive The Pandemic

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) has introduced “new online forums — dubbed engagement hubs — aimed at improving highways, streets and transit services in collaboration with the public. San Diegans will be able to watch videos on proposed projects, fill out surveys and leave detailed comments down to the street level using interactive maps.” Although COVID-19 lockdowns provided impetus for the development of these new public engagement tools, SANDAG officials point out that residents appreciate their convenience, and for that reason similar forums will continue in use after the pandemic as adjuncts to traditional methods of outreach. The Maine Turnpike Authority and Michigan DOT are also reportedly part of this technology trend.
