Editorial: Biden And Buttigieg Shouldn’t Be Shy To Seek A Fuel Tax Hike

The Baltimore Sun editorial board laments the Biden administration’s willingness to back away from support for a federal fuel tax increase. (That position became clear last week following USDOT secretary-designate Pete Buttigieg’s confirmation hearing.) A long-overdue and much needed increase would also advance Biden’s climate change goals, the editors claim. They argue that Buttigieg, if confirmed, should use the tax issue “to at least educate his fellow citizens” about the serious shortfall in infrastructure investment, a problem that won’t be resolved simply by hiking the gas tax rate.
