Daily News Editorial Strongly Support NYC Congestion Pricing
The editors of New York’s Daily News reiterate the newspaper’s firm support for MTA’s Manhattan congestion pricing program, stating, “The benefits are many, from less traffic, which is good for drivers, air quality and wear and tear on the roads, to improved transit. Everyone wins, including drivers, who will have quicker trips.” The editors add, “Ignore the carping from Jersey pols and only allow a credit against the congestion fee for drivers using the four tunnels feeding directly into the zone: The Lincoln, Holland, Brooklyn-Battery and Midtown. Dedicate the proceeds to fund better transit. When the cashless tolling finally starts, the traffic will go down and the money will go up. And the only problem will be that we wasted years getting there.”

The Mercury News’ Gary Richards hears from a reader who credits Bay Area tolled express lanes for making a recent 145-mile round-trip between San Jose and Yuba City (north of Sacramento) easier and faster than expected. The motorist particularly notes that express lanes “seem[ed] to lighten traffic in the regular lanes.” (Another reader comment worth noting concerns the current “epidemic” of excessive speeding.)

Philippine Daily Inquirer reports, San Miguel Corporation (SMC) received government regulatory approval for construction of the Pasig River Expressway (PAREX) project in metro Manila. A “six-lane elevated toll road, which will take five years to complete, will be built over the Pasig River and connect the eastern and western portions of the capital district. It will also be linked to SMC’s Skyway 3. . . .” The overall cost of constructing the 19.37-kilometer (12-mile) facility is reported to be 95 billion PHP (approximately 1.9 billion USD). SMC president Ramon Ang said PAREX, which he described as “the future urban transport” system, will include bus rapid transit, river ferry, bicycle and pedestrian elements, in addition to motor vehicle lanes.
CNN Philippines reports that construction will begin when SMC receives a Notice to Proceed from the government, which could be as soon as the first quarter of next year.
An SMC news release includes detailed information about the scope and objectives of the project.
