USDOT Official Outlines Plans For Distributing IIJA Funds
“Government Technology” reports, “In the next six months, transit agencies, transportation departments and other organizations which play a part in the vast United States movement ecosystem could begin to see how the recently passed federal infrastructure package will unfold.” During a media briefing on the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) yesterday, USDOT Deputy Secretary Polly Trottenberg said funds will be distributed through a range of grant, pilot and related programs aimed at improving existing facilities and networks, but also changing the nation’s transportation priorities to reduce reduce climate risk and social inequity. ““We are an administration that is focused on tackling climate change and equity in a way that I’ve never seen before in my time in government,” said Trottenberg, who added that USDOT will work closely with state and local transportation agencies “to transform the system.”

The Detroit News reports, “The Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor Tunnel were busy, but not crammed with Canadian tourists Monday when United States reopened its border to travelers.” A return of normal day-to-day traffic is not immediately expected because of a COVID-19 testing requirement imposed by Canada on anyone entering or reentering the county. The expensive and time-consuming testing procedure has critics on both sides of the border. Windsor, Ontario, Mayor Mayor Drew Dilkens told reporters, “Now there’s a pathway to cross, yet that pathway is dampened by an unreasonable and costly requirement for PCR tests to return to Canada. This PCR test requirement is a hard stop barrier for families to reunite except for the wealthiest of Canadians, and that is unfair.”
