Microsoft, US Government Warn Of Malware Threat To Infrastructure Entities
Microsoft announced yesterday that it has detected “stealthy and targeted malicious activity” by a Chinese government-sponsored hacking operation directed at the computer networks of “critical infrastructure organizations” in Guam and other parts of the US. The company provided details to enable businesses and agencies to detect and remove the malware. Microsoft said “the affected organizations span the communications, manufacturing, utility, transportation, construction, maritime, government, information technology, and education sectors. Observed behavior suggests that the threat actor intends to perform espionage and maintain access without being detected for as long as possible.” Microsoft has directly notified customers identified as being targeted or compromised by the malicious code.
According to The New York Times, the hacker group — called “Volt Typhoon” — uses “web shell” code to pierce firewalls and enable remote access to a server for purposes that potentially include a destructive attack. The US National Security Agency and partner organizations issued an advisory with additional information on the threat.
