Maine Turnpike Offers Free Roadside Assistance And A Special Greeting This Weekend

The Maine Turnpike Authority will offer free roadside assistance this Memorial Day weekend, Spectrum News reports. The holiday traditionally marks the start of the state’s busy summer tourist season, and this year traffic is projected to surpass 1 million vehicles. Construction is suspended, and the Maine Turnpike Safety Patrol will be operating gratis from the turnpike’s southern tip through Exit 19 in Wells, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM today through Monday. Visitors to the northbound Kennebunk Service Plaza on Friday will be treated to a special cameo appearance by Miles the Maine Turnpike Moose, the MTA mascot who was eased into retirement in 2021 when open-road tolling was introduced at the York toll plaza. Miles, along with Clawdette the Lobster, for years had entertained and handed out gifts to motorists waiting in line at York.

Heavy Memorial Day Holiday Traffic Predicted

Axios reports, AAA predicts this long weekend’s US travel will be seven percent higher than in 2022, making this the third-busiest Memorial Day holiday on record. It estimates that 37.1 million Americans will take to the highways, a six percent increase over last year’s total. AAA trip booking data suggest Orlando, New York City and Las Vegas, as well as port cities on both coasts will be popular destinations.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, the West Virginia Turnpike, the Illinois Tollway Authority, and Florida AAA are among those making optimistic predictions about holiday weekend traffic volume.
