Op-Ed: Let NJ Public Pension Systems Invest In Revenue-Generating Infrastructure

In a NJ Spotlight News op-ed, New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney makes the case for passage of a measure he sponsored (SB 3637) to create “an infrastructure trust fund to hold and manage assets transferred to the public corporation by state and local governments for the benefit of New Jersey’s public employee pension funds.” The bill, Sweeney writes, would allow public pension systems to invest in “revenue-generating assets like water and sewage treatment systems, High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes, parking facilities and real estate to provide new, diversified sources of revenue for their investment portfolios.” He argues the proposal would help reduce the state’s unfunded pension liability while creating jobs and funding infrastructure upgrades.

Cashless Conversion Is Expected To Reduce Some NY Bridge Backups

WPDH reports, the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge redecking project is causing major travel delays, but some improvement is expected when from the New York State Bridge Authority launches its conversion to cashless tolling. “Starting after the Fourth of July weekend, toll booths will stop taking cash on the Beacon side of the bridge. . . . While this won’t speed up the construction project, it is expected to lighten congestion on the eastbound side of the bridge by allowing all traffic to keep moving through the tolls without stopping.”
