Preparations For Oklahoma’s Turner Turnpike Expansion Will Start In February
KOCO reports, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority (OTA) is advising motorists that barriers will go up on the Turner Turnpike (I-44) east of Tulsa in two weeks in preparation for the roadway being widened to three lanes in each direction. The project is part of OTA’s 15-year, $5 billion ACCESS Oklahoma program, which picks up where the state’s Driving Forward program left off. It will add interchanges to the turnpike and, eventually, HOV and truck lanes. OTA is preparing drivers for six to seven years of construction and related slowdowns on the Turner Turnpike as the agency works its way east toward Oklahoma City in a series of widening projects.
TRN notes, this Turner Turnpike expansion is the first ACCESS Oklahoma project to go to contract. Duit Construction of Edmond, Oklahoma, will be paid $98.5 million to widen I-44 between Bristow and Heyburn, a nearly six-mile stretch.

The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) yesterday issued Addendum 01 to its Request for Proposals regarding Wrong-Way Vehicle Detection and Notification Systems. The addendum includes procurement schedule revisions, one of which extends the proposal due date to February 29, 2024, by 4:00 PM ET.

FreightWaves reports, “The federal government’s controversial truck speed limiter rule has been delayed once again and is now set to be published in May. Originally scheduled to roll out by mid-2023, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration [FMCSA] pushed the date back to Dec. 29 of last year. But according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s latest significant rulemaking report, the speed limiter rule will not be out for another five months — or possibly longer.” The rule under consideration would require installation of an electronic device on all trucks weighing over 26,000 pounds. The device would be set to control a vehicle’s maximum speed at a level that FMCSA has so far not determined. The article notes that factions within the trucking industry disagree over what the maximum speed setting should be.
