Thursday Open House Will Spotlight Kansas Express Lanes Construction Progress

The City of Overland Park, Kansas, in collaboration with Kansas DOT and the Kansas Turnpike Authority, has scheduled an open house on Thursday evening, February 22, to “share updates and construction plans” regarding the 69 Express project. “Displays will illustrate roadway and interchange designs, upcoming construction plans, noise wall locations and toll lane operation.” The $570 million project aims to provide long-term congestion relief, more predictable travel and enhanced safety in a busy, crash-prone suburban Kansas City highway corridor. Among other things, it involves widening the roadway by adding one tolled express lane in each direction over a six-mile corridor. The new lanes will be the first of their kind in the state.

A project news release notes that all the information provided during the open house all will later be posted on the project website.

Text Scammers Target Bay Area FasTrak Customers

San Francisco Examiner reports, text scammers are targeting Bay Area FasTrak customers, according to a warning recently issued by the Bay Area Toll Authority (BATA) and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). For several weeks, some account holders, drivers who use the state-owned and Golden Gate toll bridges and the region’s express lanes, have been receiving fraudulent messages stating that they owe toll payments. The messages include a link to an online payment site. MTC spokesperson John Goodwin urges motorists to conduct FasTrak business exclusively through the official website and notes that FasTrak never uses text messaging to request payments.

Cape May, NJ, Toll Bridges Get New Surveillance Cameras

The Cape May County (New Jersey) Bridge Commission explained at its monthly board meeting last week why it’s installed about $170,000 worth of surveillance cameras on the five toll bridges the commission operates, OCNJ Daily reports. The cameras are sited on toll gantries and bridge piers for safety and security to document potential accidents within camera view, to oversee boat traffic, to share information with law enforcement as necessary, to enforce bridge weight restrictions and to deter graffiti artists. The cameras will operate separately from the equipment used for toll collection, officials said.
