NC Local Officials Seek An Alternative To P3 Financing Of Cape Fear Bridge Replacement
StarNewsOnline.com reports, “With the possibility of a privately financed toll bridge off the table, Wilmington-area leaders are looking at other avenues to help fund a replacement for the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.” Although local officials hope to win state support for the project, they will have to contend with current North Carolina DOT policy that favors improving deficient and functionally obsolete bridges over building costly replacements.

WREG reports on Memphis residents’ relief at the partial reopening of the Hernando DeSoto (I-40) Bridge that closed in May after inspectors found a “significant fracture” in a 900-foot-long horizontal beam. The eastbound lanes opened to traffic on Saturday. Tennessee DOT expects the westbound lanes to become accessible on or before Friday, August 6.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports, a committee of Australia’s parliament is studying proposals to “allow the government to declare an emergency” that would give national security agencies the power to “forcibly plug into the networks of critical infrastructure” for the purpose of combatting major cyberattacks. Information recently provided to the committee by a security official has sparked reports that Toll Group, a major international transportation and logistics firm, was slow to cooperate with government agencies last year when it was the subject of a crippling “‘IT cybersecurity incident” that disrupted its operations for months.
