Average US Gas Price Still Drops, But Diesel Costs Are Rising Once Again

MarketWatch reports, “A key gauge of U.S. inflation fell 0.1% in July thanks to tumbling gasoline prices, marking the first decline in more than two years and giving Americans some relief from a rapidly rising cost of living. The drop in the [Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index] was the first since April 2020, when the U.S. economy was locked down after the initial outbreak of the coronavirus.”

CNN Business reports, according to AAA, the national average price of a gallon of regular gas recently dropped to $3.89 from last month’s average of $4.38, continuing a 70-day streak of falling prices that one investment firm calls “the second longest on record going back to 2005.” CNN notes, “Although prices are 73 cents higher than a year ago, the recent drop is significant, especially given the inflation alarm bells set off by the surge above $5 just two months ago.”

In contrast, “FleetOwner” reports today, “Diesel prices have done nothing halfway this year. The U.S. average for trucking’s main fuel spiked 20.6 cents to $5.115 per gallon for the week of Aug. 29, the first increase in more than two months and first time the average has risen above $5 since the beginning of August. . . .” According to the magazine, “Supply looks to be the cause of the reversal of diesel’s downward trend since mid-June. According to an Associated Press report, diesel and heating oil supplies in the Northeast are more than 50% below the recent average, raising concerns that an extreme weather event could cause supply disruptions, federal officials said. Fuel supplies are lower than normal across the country for a variety of reasons, including the war in Ukraine. But it’s the worst in the Northeast.”
