Alabama DOT Says Mobile Bridge And Bayway Project Will Ease Collision Problem
WALA reports, according to Alabama DOT, the number of crashes recorded at Mobile’s Wallace Tunnel increased tenfold between 2010 and 2021, and in a nine-mile segment of I-10 west of the tunnel, collisions occurred at the rate of two a day last year, each one causing an average of 2.5 hours of congestion. The department acknowledges that distracted driving accounts for some of the increase, “[b]ut [rising] congestion is definitely a big factor.” The Mobile River Bridge and Bayway Project — the proposal for construction of a new toll bridge and expansion of the viaducts that carry I-10 over Mobile Bay (the “Bayway”) — will provide new capacity ALDOT says is needed to reduce collisions.

PayByCar announced that it is once again collaborating with Massachusetts DOT to make more drivers aware of the Boston-based company’s low-touch, E-ZPass-enabled fuel payment solution. As part of a promotional campaign in effect through Labor Day (September 5), PaybyCar and 27 Alltown convenience stores are offering a limited-time, limited-quantity, 30-cents-per-gallon gas discount to new and existing PaybyCar enrollees. “MassDOT,” said highway administrator Jonathan Gulliver, “is always looking for ways to make travel safer and more secure, so we’re pleased [PayByCar] leverages E-ZPass technology to make refueling faster and easier. The ‘Driven by E-ZPass’ pay-by-text payment method is an innovation that continues to show promise and we look forward to the results of the program’s first-in-the-nation deployment here in Massachusetts.”
