Oklahoma DOT Begins Testing Wrong-Way Driving Deterrence And Warning System

Oklahoma DOT announced that it is testing a wrong-way driving detection and alert system on six ramps along I-40. “Using thermal cameras, the system identifies when a vehicle enters an exit ramp in the wrong direction and displays flashing lights on already posted Wrong Way signs to increase noticeability. Installation of internally lit ‘Do Not Enter’ signage allows the warnings to be better seen at night. Oftentimes, wrong way drivers fail to turn on their headlights, making it difficult to see reflective signage. Internally lit signs are more visible regardless of whether a vehicle’s headlights are on.” ODOT said the $2.3 million test is the first phase of a plan to install warning systems statewide.

Washington Commission Takes Up Tacoma Narrows Bridge Toll Rate Setting Today

The Washington State Transportation Commission begins two days of meetings today. Among other things, the body must decide to advance one of three options for reducing Tacoma Narrows Bridge toll rates pursuant to funding legislation passed earlier this year. After reviewing a bridge financial update and public input gathered last month, the commission will select one option for further public review and comment before making a final rate adjustment decision at an August 23 hearing.

MYNorthwest.com reports that the commission is poised to select “Option 3” — a flat 75-cent toll rate reduction for two-axle vehicles, with a per axle multiplier applied for vehicles with three-plus axles — despite the fact that it is the one least favored by the public, according to the results of the commission’s June survey.
