Oregon DOT Receives Public Comment On Proposed Tolling Policy Amendment

Oregon Capital Chronicle reports on the public meeting held yesterday to gather comments on a draft amendment of the Oregon highway plan’s tolling provisions, changes intended to “create a blueprint for the Transportation Department to follow when considering adding tolls to new or existing roads.” Participants included citizens and local officials who urged ODOT “to think about transit and potentially stranded drivers” as they set policies and begin to introducing tolling on I-5 and I-205 around Portland. ODOT announced at the start of the meeting that it has extended the deadline for submitting written comments on the proposed amendment by over a month, to September 15.

Wales Government Proposes Adopting Road Use Charging

Daily Post (via NorthWalesLive) reports, the draft of Wales’ National Transport Delivery Plan 2022-2027 proposes the introduction of “fair road user charging.” The government’s primary intent is to incentivize people to reduce driving and make greater use of alternative transportation and public transit, but it is also looking to sustain transportation funding as the revenue from liquid fuel taxes diminishes. While UK government approval is required “to implement universal road charging,” the Welsh government has statutory authority to “provide powers to local authorities to implement local schemes.” (The proposed transport delivery plan is undergoing public review through October 11.)

Daily Post notes that the RUC proposal has already sparked a political debate.
