Manhattan Borough President Prods MTA To Step Up Congestion Pricing Prep
New York Post reports, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine yesterday “urged the MTA to start hammering out details for its much-delayed [congestion pricing program]” and recommended specific action, such as making toll rate policy decisions. Support for congestion pricing is strongest among Levine’s constituents. “Residents and officials in the outer-boroughs and suburbs are less enthusiastic — and U.S. Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island) and Josh Gottheimer (D-New Jersey) responded to Levine’s call with proposals to prevent federal dollars from going to congestion pricing.” An MTA official said there are no plans to use federal money for the toll program, but Malliotakis countered that the authority has the option to request it.
Gothamist and CBS News New York report on some of Levine’s specific recommendations regarding the program’s toll rate structure.

Ecotoll, the mobile payment app from transportation technology developer ClearRoad, announced it has expanded its capabilities. Rental car drivers can now use Ecotoll and avoid rental company charges for toll management. The same upgrade allows people driving cars borrowed for a short period of time from friends or family to pay tolls. The app is also now available for paying motorcycle tolls. Ecotoll is currently operable only in the San Francisco Bay Area and greater Los Angeles, but is “looking towards expanding its coverage to the EZ-Pass network before the end of 2022.”

Bloomberg Government reports, USDOT “is planning to bring industry and states together later this year to develop a road map for advancing technology that allows cars to communicate wirelessly, an agency official said Tuesday.” Government and industry leaders believe V2X technology can improve traffic safety and counter the recent increase in crashes and fatalities. An industry group, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, maintains federal action to create “a regulatory and policy environment” conducive to adoption of V2X is needed. This week, it issued 10 recommendations for addressing the “regulatory uncertainty” it sees as a hindrance to wider V2X deployment.

Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports, motorists traveling on the North Texas Tollway Authority’s Chisholm Trail Parkway late Tuesday night encountered a strange assortment of stray animals, including camels, steers, cows and a zeedonk (a cross between a donkey and a zebra). The creatures apparently escaped from a passing transport vehicle, and some were unfortunately struck by drivers before police and animal control agents arrived on the scene.
