Florida Drivers Have Much To Learn About The I-4 Express Lanes

WESH reports on Florida DOT’s continuing effort to get Orlando residents ready to start using the I-4 Express when it opens early next year. The department and the Florida Highway Patrol are aware that drivers face a a steep learning curve because of the differences between the new express lanes and other toll facilities in central Florida. Lane entrance and exit limitations, dynamic rate setting and a transponder requirement are all aspects of the I-4 experience that will be unfamiliar to most users at the beginning.

Engineers Find A Way To Stop The Golden Gate Bridge Bridge From Singing

San Francisco Chronicle reports, Golden Gate Bridge engineers working with aerodynamic and acoustic experts think they’ve found a way to eliminate (or at least reduce) the sound high winds make when they pass over the vertical slats in the bridge’s west railing. Their solution “calls for attaching U-shaped aluminum clips containing a thin rubber sleeve to all 12,000 vertical slats on the railings. The rubber will absorb vibrations where the vertical slats meet the horizontal rails, and reduce 75% of the vibrations that cause the bridge to whistle under high-wind conditions. The clips will be painted . . . to blend in with bridge’s architecture.” On Friday, the bridge district board approved a staff recommendation to use $450,000 in bridge operating funds to have the clips fabricated. Bridge maintenance workers will do the installation work.

A Golden Gate Bridge District news release has much more information about the sound problem, and the testing and and analysis that led engineers to the aluminum clip solution.
