OK Turnpike Issues RFI Regarding Mobile Payment Technology

The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority has issued a request for information from qualified vendors of existing innovative mobile payment applications and/or mobile phone payment systems. All RFI information and documents are available through the above link to the CivCastUSA website. Vendor questions are due in writing at the website no later than tomorrow, June 24. OTA will respond to all questions via the CivCastUSA website without identifying the submitting party. The RFI response due date is 2:00 PM (CST), Friday, July 2, 2021.

Commentary: Use Private Charging Intermediaries To Allay VMT Privacy Concerns

Bloomberg Opinion columnist Karl W. Smith (via The Press of Atlantic City) disputes the efficacy of indexing the existing gas tax to inflation and presents a concise, cogent argument for US adoption of a vehicle-miles-traveled tax. He suggests the surrender of privacy is the public’s main concern about VMT, but he has a solution for that. Drivers who object to the government tracking their movements “could opt for niche providers with automatic data deletion procedures and an army of lawyers designed to thwart any potential subpoena.” Smith concludes, “No matter what the solution, however, the U.S. has to move on from its antiquated system of financing transportation infrastructure.”
