Alabama DOT Corrects Misinformation about Mobile River Toll Plans

WPMI reports, “Mobile County [Alabama] Commissioner Jerry Carl, who is running for Congress, made waves this week when he said . . . that as soon as construction begins on the 1-10 Mobile River Bridge project, the Wallace Tunnel would be tolled.” An ALDOT spokesperson reportedly issued a prompt denial of the claim, telling WPMI, “We have always said and are committed to no early tolling.”

ARTBA Renews Call for Congress to Fix Highway Trust Fund

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association yesterday warned a US House subcommittee that “Congress’s chronic failure to fix the Highway Trust Fund program threatens all federal surface transportation programs, including transit projects.” In testimony presented by ARTBA chair Bob Alger (who is also chair of Lane Construction’s board), the association supported an increase in the Federal Transit Administration’s Capital Investment Grant Program and “three key options” — increase federal fuel taxes, impose a freight-based user fee and charge an electric vehicle users fee — “that Congress should consider to permanently fix the HTF.”

ARTBA has issued a comprehensive report making recommendations for reauthorization of the 2015 FAST Act transportation funding law that expires in October 2020.

Italian Police Seize Atlantia Board Records

The Financial Times reports, “Italy’s financial police have seized board meeting minutes from the Rome offices of Atlantia, whose subsidiary operated the Genoa bridge that collapsed last year. . . . The company [today] confirmed the raid and said police had taken documents relating to board meetings of the past 10 years. One senior police official said that the aim of the search, which took place [yesterday], was to determine how any safety problems involving the Morandi bridge had been brought to the board’s attention.” The article notes that there are calls for Atlantia to make public an internal report on the bridge’s condition. The Financial Times revealed the existence of the report earlier this week.
