Florida DOT Won’t Finish Sanibel Causeway Restoration Until 2027

It’s been nearly two years since Hurricane Ian washed away much of the tolled Sanibel Island Causeway in Lee County, Florida. Within weeks of the disaster, FDOT and a host of contractors completed an emergency repair that provided a temporary surface link to the mainland. The county was allowed to restore general public access and resume toll collection by early 2023. This year, traffic was finally routed onto permanent lanes. However, as Naples Daily News reports, complete restoration of the tollway will take considerably more time. “While significant progress has been made, there is still work to be done and officials have said it will be 2027 before the project can be considered finished.”
