Florida Attorney General Cracks Down On Toll-Related Smishing Spree

WPEC reports, Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) is escalating enforcement and public awareness efforts to fight back against a string of text message scams in which fraudulent overseas actors are impersonating US toll agencies to collect unsuspecting drivers’ personal information. The article lists 10 websites recently shut down by the state’s Cyber Fraud Enforcement Unit. “Moody explained the aim of these scammers stretches beyond the diversion of toll payments. They orchestrate their schemes to collect personal information, including identity and bank details, from unsuspecting victims. Furthermore, the scam extends to the potential installation of malware on the victims’ phones.” She identified tactics often used in financial scams and encouraged people to access the SunPass website directly rather than clicking links sent to them. The article includes a short code that can be used to report suspicious text messages or telephone calls  directly to law enforcement agencies.
